Our History

2001

The WSO began with one man’s dream of bringing beautiful music to Washington County. Dave Owens, formerly of Marianna, PA, wanted Washington County to have an orchestra. Starting with nothing but an idea, Owens sent our press releases to recruit musicians.

Initial funding for the organization was secured by Lou Waller Sr. from Washington Financial, a life-long supporter of the WSO. After months of planning and effort, the WSO’s first concert in June 2002, at First Lutheran Church in Washington, had about 35 musicians performing for an audience of 210 people. Afterward, the WSO moved to three other venues, the George Washington Hotel, the Washington Park Elementary School (the WSO outgrew both venues), and in 2006, the WSO moved to Trinity High School, where it would remain until the pandemic.

Many foundations, businesses, and corporations have contributed to the success of the organization, including the aforementioned Washington Financial, the Washington County Community Foundation, the Laurel Foundation, and the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency.

2015

In 2015, the WSO hired its first General Manager, Adam Shaffer, who would go on to be with the symphony for 9 years. In Spring 2024, Cassandra Muhr came aboard as the organization’s new General Manager".

Today

Now at the Olin Fine Arts Center, the WSO continues to grow. Nearly 70 musicians perform under the direction of Yugo Sava Ikach, to an enthusiastic and growing audience. The symphony has commissioned numerous original compositions and arrangements, and is proud of the work it does to partner with local artists and performers as well as guest conductors.

The WSO credits its success to the dedicated conductor, volunteer musicians, and board members who work diligently each season to offer concerts that fulfill the WSO’s mission to engage the community by providing accessible, quality musical performances that entertain, educate, and inspire.

The WSO reaches out to bring classical music to many who may be hearing it for the first time while also presenting popular favorites. Artistic Director Ikach entertains each audience with his personal style, bringing the music to life through the orchestra with selections of classics and pops. The WSO is more than a concert with special guests and featured artists.

The WSO puts on a show and Washington County and the surrounding areas have responded.
