Young Vocalist Competition

For students in grades 9 through 12.

The WSO sponsors the Young Vocalist Competition each year. Students who audition are asked to sing one standard repertoire piece. 

Open to students who reside or attend school in the following counties: Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette, and Greene. Homeschool and cyber school students in these counties are also eligible.

Audition Requirements & Expectations

The Washington Symphony Orchestra's Young Vocalist Competition is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their musical abilities in a professional audition setting. All applicants are expected to arrive prepared and adhere to the following requirements:

• Memorization: All audition selections must be performed from memory. Sheet music is not permitted for vocalists.
• Musical Preparation: Applicants should be thoroughly rehearsed, including with their accompanist, and demonstrate accuracy in notes, rhythms, lyrics, and musical expression.
• Appropriate Attire: Students should dress professionally, as they would for a recital or formal performance. Neat, presentable attire and appropriate footwear are expected. Jeans, athletic wear, and other casual clothing are discouraged.
• Professionalism: Applicants should arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled audition, be prepared to introduce their selection, and demonstrate appropriate audition etiquette.
• Music Copies: Applicants must provide three copies of their selected piece for the adjudicators.

Please note: Memorization, musical preparation, stage presence, and professionalism will be considered as part of the audition evaluation.

Applicants must bring an accompanist to their audition. 

Winner Announced

The winner will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to perform a solo with the WSO at the May concert.

The winner will perform at our May 2027 concert held on May 15th at 7:30pm and May 16th at 3:00pm. Due to the theme, Kickin' It Country, students may audition with either a classical/musical theater piece or a country song.
