Young Artist Competition

For students in grades 9 through 12.

The WSO presents the Young Artist Competition each year. Instruments include brass, harp, percussion, piano, strings, and woodwinds. Students who audition will be asked to play one movement of a standard repertoire piece for solo instruments and orchestra. The competition is sponsored by Sheila Wexler, in memory of Dr. Isafore Wexler and Rella Blaustein Wexler.

Open to students who reside or attend school in the following counties: Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette, and Greene. Homeschool and cyber school students in these counties are also eligible.

Audition Requirements & Expectations

The Washington Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Competition is an opportunity for student instrumentalists to demonstrate their musical abilities in a professional audition setting. All applicants are expected to arrive prepared and adhere to the following requirements:

Musical Preparation: Applicants should be thoroughly rehearsed and demonstrate accuracy in notes, rhythms, technique, and musical expression. Memorization is not required.
Appropriate Attire: Students should dress professionally, as they would for a recital or formal performance. Neat, presentable attire and appropriate footwear are expected. Jeans, athletic wear, and other casual clothing are discouraged.
Professionalism: Applicants should arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled audition, be prepared to introduce their selection, and demonstrate appropriate audition etiquette.
Accompaniment: Applicants should rehearse with their accompanist prior to the audition, if applicable.
Music Copies: Applicants must provide three copies of their selected piece for the adjudicators.

Please note: Musical preparation, technical proficiency, stage presence, and professionalism will be considered as part of the audition evaluation.

Applicants must bring an accompanist to their audition.

The winner will be able to perform a solo with the WSO at the March concert and will receive a cash prize.

The winner will perform at our March 2027 concert held on March 6th at 7:30pm and March 7th at 3:00pm
